Reborn Baby Dolls might soon be getting the exposure they so richly deserve, but for a sad and heartbreaking reason. Courtney Stodden, an American reality show contestant made famous by her stints on Celebrity Big Brother and Couples Therapy (and her marriage at 16 to the then 50-year-old actor Doug Hutchison), has sparked controversy and a wave of support by very publicly documenting her purchase and first few days with her new reborn baby doll.
Six weeks prior to September 2016, the young TV star shared the heartbreaking news that she’d miscarried the baby she was expecting with her husband. This week, the 21-year-old appeared in public for the first time with the new reborn, cradling the doll affectionately as she walked down the street. Her purchase of the doll has been well-documented on Instagram, and she has announced that “I know it may seem a little strange, but my therapist suggested that having him may help me cope with my loss.” Regardless of the comments that are flaring up online, Courtney has continued to treat her doll as if he were alive, and in doing so, she has brought the world of reborn dolls, and those who collect and keep them, more into the mainstream. While most doll collectors know that reborn dolls are much more than ways for women to cope with the loss of a child through miscarriage or early childhood death, the fact that women are still told that a reborn might be the option for them during their period of grieving is a wonderful opportunity for those in the field to educate those who have never heard of the dolls before, and who might think that such behavior is “strange” or “weird.” The dolls are incredibly popular in both Britain and the U.S., and are now only growing in popularity from stories like this. From this tragedy, reborns are now getting some justified recognition and discussion.
